2023 Porsche 911 GT3 R – Just in time for it to participate in the 2023 season as well as the new FIA World Endurance Championship GT3 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans beginning in 2024, the all-new 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 R customer racecar has been unveiled. Porsche ripped the covers off of their brand-new 911 GT3 R racing car exactly one month before they revealed their road-legal brother, the 911 GT3 RS road vehicle that had been previously hinted at. On the other hand, with a starting price of over a half million dollars, it is not exactly a cheap option.
2023 Porsche 911 GT3 R Review
The new 992-generation Porsche 911-based GT3 R, which has been in development since 2019, is equipped with an engine that has undergone a number of significant upgrades. The engine is still a naturally aspirated flat-six engine that is water-cooled and has direct injection, but the capacity has been raised by five percent, moving from 3,997 to 4,194 cubic centimeters, making it a 4.2-liter motor. Other characteristics of the engine remain the same. In order to make room for the underbody diffuser, the engine as a whole was actually rotated forward by five degrees. In addition, the compressor and alternator for the air conditioning system were moved front and lower in the car so that the weight could be distributed more evenly throughout the vehicle. Because of this, there was an improvement in the overall weight balance. When compared to the previous racer, this one’s engine has received a 65-horsepower boost, taking its total output all the way up to 565 horsepower. The engine is still connected to a paddle-shiftable six-speed sequential gearbox; this configuration has not changed.
“We hit a home run with the very successful product that came before it in the line of production. As a direct consequence of this, the bar for its replacement is set very high.” This is something that the Project Manager for the 911 GT3 R at Porsche Motorsport, Sebastian Golz, lays a great deal of attention on. “The classification of performance windows that is specified by the BoP quickly nullifies any advantage that might have been realized by making the Porsche 911 GT3 R even faster. Less important to us than increasing its top speed was developing the new Porsche 911 GT3 R. It was of the highest significance to us that our customers be able to operate the racing vehicle at a quicker speed for a longer amount of time. Because of this need for longevity, we focused the bulk of our efforts on enhancing the vehicle’s driveability rather than its durability. This is shown by the fact that the new 4.2-liter engine has a larger useable rpm range, more stable and consistent aerodynamics, and reduced stresses on the rear tyres, which enables their potential to last for a longer period of time.”
In addition to that, the suspension has been tweaked to perfection. Both the front and rear axles are supported by updated and adjustable KW shock absorbers, with the front axle being supported by a double-wishbone design and the rear axle being supported by a multi-link system respectively. Porsche asserts that the adjustments it made to the suspension, some of which were borrowed from the 911 RSR, enable more accurate steering, reduce setup time, and contribute to a decrease in tire wear. Additionally, Porsche believes that these modifications lead to a reduction in tire wear. All of these upgrades were implemented in the hope of making the item more user-friendly for the client teams that would be racing with it. In addition, the wheelbase of the 911 R has been expanded by 2.64 inches as a direct consequence of moving the rear wheels farther back in the car than they were in the previous model. An elevated underbody in front of the front axle, in combination with a smooth undertray and a rear diffuser, results in greater airflow, which in turn results in an increase in downforce. This is because of the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle.
However, almost all of the body panels on the 911 R are made from carbon fiber. These panels include the frunk hood, engine cover, rear wing, roof panel, side panels, and doors. The wheel arches are made from aramid fibers. The body is based on the same lightweight aluminum-steel composite design as the production car. The Porsche 911 R is capable of reaching a maximum road speed of 320 kilometers per hour and a maximum track speed of 340 kilometers per hour (similar to fiberglass). The specialized company AP offers vented and slotted front steel discs with a diameter of 15.35 inches and six pistons for the purpose of providing braking capabilities. These discs are held together by 14.56-inch discs that have four pistons at the rear, and aluminum monoblock calipers are used to clamp down on them. Porsche states that the enhanced software for the car’s fifth-generation anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps decrease wear on the tires and brakes and that the traction control system has also been improved. Both of these improvements were made by Porsche.
Porsche has shifted the driver’s seat inside the car inside, bringing it closer to the vehicle’s center of gravity, in order to improve the roll cage geometry and comply with new FIA regulation side impact protection regulations. These goals were accomplished by moving the driver’s seat inward. It is possible to make adjustments to the driver controls, such as the steering wheel and pedals, even though the seat itself will stay in its original position. In order to improve the timeliness of driver changes, specialized ramps have been attached to the clasps of the six-point harness. According to Porsche’s estimations, the time it takes to switch drivers during pit stops should decrease by around one second as a result of the use of these ramps. The multi-switch configuration on the steering wheel was borrowed from the 911 RSR Le Man’s racer, while the 10.3-inch driver display was borrowed from the 911 GT3 Cup racing.
